Embrace NYU Spirit Through Ultra Violet: Pantone’s Color of the Year

Every spring, Pantone decides on a color to represent the upcoming year. The color isn’t chosen randomly or by favorability from staff — instead, it is meant to capture the spirit of the particular year. The 2018 Pantone Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, described by Pantone to be a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful” purple shade, symbolic of experimentation, nonconformity and visionary exploration. And what better shade than Ultra Violet to be worn by NYU Violets? Although the bold color may seem intimidating, here are some ways to style UltraViolet into your everyday wardrobe.

Color Blocking
Ultra Violet is definitely a statement color. Instead of shying away from its vividness, embrace the dramatic quality of the shade by pairing it with contrasting colors. In this look, the crisp white blouse and bag, styled with bright yellow boots, emphasizes the Ultra Violet skirt. Additional tip: rock a minimal hairstyle and stay simple with makeup so your outfit isn’t overwhelming.

Complimentary Ultra Violets
More than one article of clothing can be Ultra Violet in a particular outfit. In this ensemble, the matching Ultra Violet shoes and coat perfectly complement each other. We recommend you choose the exact same shades of Ultra Violet; slightly mismatched tones can be distracting (unless that’s what you’re going for).

A Pop of Color
As demonstrated by Kylie, you can completely transform a simple white dress with a pop of Ultra Violet over-the-knee boots. And to give your outfit a refreshing new twist, flaunt your other Ultra Violet accessories such as belts, necklaces and earrings. Ultra Violet stands out more against lighter colors of clothing, so wear white or silver if you really want it to pop.

NYU might not be known as a university with a sports culture, but you can express your appreciation for the NYU Violets through your fashion choices. Instead of screaming your lungs out from the bleachers at a football game or tailgating every Friday, silently add an Ultra Violet scarf to your outfit. Rocking the 2018 Color of the Year is a subtle way to show that you possess both NYU spirit and consciousness of this year’s fashion trends.
