Denim Love: Spice up Your Look

Denim jackets have officially made their comeback this year, and we love it! It’s an easy staple that can boost your OOTD so much more. There’s nothing I love more than wearing my loose-fitted denim jacket with a hooded jacket underneath. However, while you might love your jean jacket as much as I love mine, it can get a bit boring after a while. This point exactly is why, lately, I’ve been trying out new ways to spice it up. The answer: lapel pins, patches, paint, and embroidery!

#1: Add Some of Your PINterests!

Pins are super cute to pair with your jean jacket! I own about five different lapel pins and switch them up every once in awhile to keep it interesting.  If you’re buying from the right shop, they should be quite affordable. The photo above is a great example of how much more or little you can choose to customize. Even if you go with one or two pins, it’s subtle enough to make all the difference.

Where to find lapel pins:

Online: Little Arrow, Strange Ways, and Etsy shop Penelope Gazin.

NYU Area: Random Accessories in the East Village (between E 4th St & 2nd Ave)

#2: Patch it up

Patches are a great way to completely change the look of your denim jacket. There are so many options to choose from, like this cool one above with the banner patch. One of my favorite jackets is actually a denim one I ironed a tiger on the back of, and I don’t regret it! The only downside is that if you still want to own a plain jean jacket, you’ll have to buy another one to iron the patch onto.

Where to find patches:

Online: Little Arrow, Strange Ways, and Etsy shop Penelope Gazin.

NYU Area: try Random Accessories in the East Village (between E 4th St & 2nd Ave)

#3: Go Picasso with Paint

Paint is another change to your denim jacket that you can’t undo, but it’s totally worth it!  This one above is very intricate, but it’s a great example of everything you can do to your jacket! Like everything else, you can do a little, or you can do a lot–it’s all up to you. Not a great painter? Ask an artistic friend if she/he can paint it for you. The best part: since it’s paint, you get to customize it any way you like!

Where to find paint:

Online: BLICK

NYU Area: BLICK (corner of W 20th St & 6th Ave)

#4: Embellish with Embroidery

Embroideries can look very similar to patches on your jacket, but the plus with embroidering your denim is that, like paint,  it’s 100% customizable! One of my favorite jackets in my wardrobe is a bomber jacket I got embroidered on the back and I love it!  Now, I don’t know how to embroider, but it’s really easy to find a nearby or online shop that will do it for you. The denim jacket in the photo above has me wanting to take all of my outerwear to the embroidery store!

Where to find an embroidery shop:

Online: Graphic Lab Inc.

NYU Area: ABCD Embroidery (between Walker Street & Canal Street in Chinatown)

#5: Be a Total Stud

I haven’t seen many studded denim jackets, but it’s without a doubt something I am planning on trying out in the future. With studs, you can either create a softer look, like in the photo above, or you could go all out and get really grunge with it. Studs are also quite affordable and easy to apply.  All you have to do is stop by a store that sells them or buy them online, and then to apply them you poke them through the fabric and push the prongs back with your thumbs.

Where to find studs:

Online: Studs and Spikes

NYU Area: not too close, but Mood Fabrics (between 7th Ave & 8th Ave on W 37th St)

Remember, you have the power to make your look pop and turn heads! Decorating your clothing is the perfect way to have that original look that is yours and special to you. Get creative with either one of the these five options, or mix them together. The opportunities are endless!
